This unit more specifically addresses the diverse types of student groups I may encounter as a teacher. This unit offers very useful guides for preparing for, addressing, and motivating different skill levels and ages. There are ways to decrease some of the natural feelings of anxiety that arise when thinking about teaching ?beginners.? As always, planning, organization, and clarity are key. The good news is that beginners respond best to small amounts of material reviewed extensively, which means that you don?t need to worry about compiling numerous activities for each lesson. When teaching children, there may be more physical and emotional needs to tend to than when working with adults. Harsh tones or discipline are unacceptable, but fun activities and movement can help keep children engaged. Some students, mostly adults, choose to take English classes for a specific purpose, such as employment. This means that I should assess their specific needs and goals for the class. I can use a needs analysis and, later, an evaluation to ensure that I?m adapting lessons accordingly. Finally, the classroom may be composed of multilingual students. This means everyone does not speak the same native tongue, which might be an advantage in that it compels the group to find commonality in speaking English only.
