Teach English in Daventry - TESOL Courses
In unit twelve we looked at teaching productive skills. The productive skills are speaking and writing. In order to get learners to produce speech or written work, the teacher will have to ensure that the students:
Have something to communicate about.
Want to say something.
Want to listen to something.
Are interested in what is being said.
The unit firstly focused on the difference between accuracy and fluency. Accuracy activities are concerned with correct language and is usually part of the study phase of an ESA lesson. Fluency activities are concerned with allowing students to experiment with the language and be creative with it. It is often part of the activate phase on an ESA lesson.
Next the unit looked at speaking activities for the classroom. There are controlled activities such as drilling, guided activities such as model dialogues and creative communication such as free role-play. There might be reasons why learners are reluctant to speak, such as lack of confidence or peer intimidation. But,teachers can encourage interaction with things such as group work or pair-work.
Lastly, the unit looked at teaching writing skills. Handwriting and spelling are important factors that may influence a learner's ability to learn. When teaching writing skills, one should look at layout, punctuation and creative writing.
