This unit provided a lot of information on theories, methods, and techniques including specific EFL methodology, mistakes, and feedback. I learned that ELL teaching methodologies stem from the nature versus nurture debate regarding how people learn. I also learned about the nine types of teaching methodologies. The first methodology is Grammar-Transaltion (the classical method) which is the most popular as students match their N1 to the new N2 (translation), the second is Audio-Lingualism (\"army method\" of repetitive drilling, this approach came from the Behaviorist perspective of stimulus-response theory, for example Pavlov's Dog theory), and the third is PPP Presentation, Practice, and Production which is used at many teacher training centers and has proven to be very effective in teaching lower level language, but it lacks in flexibility and can be too teacher-centered at times. The remaining six EFL teaching methodologies include Task-Based Learning, Communicative Language Teaching, Community Language Learning, the Silent Way, Suggestopaedia, and the Lexical Approach. After describing these, I wondered which one of these was the best. Unit 3 pointed out that ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) is the preferred blended approach appropriate for new trainees like myself and it is the methodology that this course is based upon.
