Evaluating students is important to understand, at any point, where yours students are at with their language learning. You can evaluate them using tutorials, student evaluation of their own level and understanding of the classes, or using tests. Tests are commonly used because schools require a certain amount of testing done. There are many types of tests and they are used at different times in the year. Placement and diagnostic tests are used at the start of a year/course to split the students into similar levels and evaluate what the students already know. Progress tests, which can come in a variety of forms, are used during the term to check students have retained the knowledge they have been taught so far. They can be done every week or month or more, but are good as they keep the students frequently reviewing and revising their work up to that point. There are also practice tests that are used to prepare students for more formal testing. There are many external language exams such as TOEFL and IELTS, which are recognized by universities, and TOEIC which is aimed at those wishing to enter an English speaking work place. Cambridge University also offers assessments for English learners, ranging from varying levels of General English tests, to tests for immigrants living in Britain such as Skills for Life and tests for Business English.
