Teach English in Whitby - TESOL Courses
This unit discusses the management of a class. The teacher must be in charge but know when and how to show his authority. If a teacher is too strict with his students, the students will become discouraged and possibly afraid of the teacher. Being overly strict will make the students uncomfortable and reduce their contribution to the class. However, if a teacher does not show enough authority, the students will be prone to misbehave and the classes will not be beneficial. It is best, therefore, to begin a course with higher authority and let up when appropriate.
Similarly, the use of discipline needs to be considered. Too little discipline will allow the students to continue misbehaving while too much will discourage students. When showing discipline, the teacher should focus on the issue and not the student. It is important to address the problem immediately so as to avoid letting the problem worsen. Often it is best to talk with the problem student privately after class.
The teacher also must ensure that he is not focusing all his attention on certain students. He must focus on both strong and weak students and include all everyone equally. It is also wise to spend extra time with struggling students individually. When working with individual students, however, the teacher should make sure the other students have an activity to keep them busy.
