This unit depicted effective ESA structures for teaching vocabulary, grammatical structures, and language functions. It provided examples of activities for Engage, Study, and Activate lessons, as well as useful criteria for determining what important vocabulary or grammar students must learn. For grammatical structures, students need to learn the meaning and use of a structure, as well as its forms and when to use it in spoken language versus written language. The most effective ESA frameworks for teaching grammar are boomerang (e.g. EASA) or patchwork (e.g. ESSESA), depending on the class level and objective. Meanwhile, for vocabulary students need to learn the meaning, use, grammar, interaction, spelling, and pronunciation of words. Learning vocabulary is largely affected by how similar the words are to ones they already in English or their own language, the difficulty of their spelling and pronunciation, and their appropriacy. Usually a straight-arrow method (ESA) is the most effective. Finally, teaching language functions are most activated with boomerang or patchwork type lessons. Breaking down difficult vocabulary or grammar lessons using the ESA structures helps to make learning English approachable and fun for students. It's integral that teachers use a method like ESA to expose students to new structures, allow them to learn the meaning, how to form it in new or different ways, as well as produce it consistently over time.
