Teach English in Ripon - TESOL Courses
This unit presented modal auxiliary verbs, passive voice, relative clauses and phrasal verbs. Modal auxiliary verbs give meaning to the main verb in a sentence, and are used for a variety of reasons (such as to express obligation, possibility, permission and ability) and can be formal and informal depending on which verb is used and in what way. The passive voice is used to shift the focus from the agent to the subject (when we do not know or want to say who/what the agent is, or we want to make the agent less important). Relative (or adjective) clauses are sentences introduced by a relative pronoun, which provide further information about a noun. When the information is essential to the sentence, it is called a defining relative clause, whereas non-essential information which does not change the meaning of the sentence is called a non-defining relative clause. Phrasal (or multi-word) verbs are made up of a verb and one/two particles, and can be intransitive (Type 1), transitive separable (Type 2), or transitive inseparable (Type 3). Phrasal verbs are particularly hard to teach to English learners (I must admit, I found them particularly hard to understand even as a native speaker). Therefore, teachers should try to slowly introduce phrasal verbs through natural, free-speaking conversations and practical exercises in class. This will gradually expose students to phrasal verbs and (hopefully) mean students are able to adopt them naturally.
