This unit discusses frequent problems and potential solutions. First classes should focus on building a rapport between the teacher and students, as well as among the students. The teacher should lead games that allow students and the teacher to share information about themselves to not only build a rapport, but also to gain insight to the subjects that will be interesting to the class in order to use them in the lessons. The teacher should also carry out a needs assessment.
Teachers should use short warmers in the beginning of class to get the students thinking in English and more receptive to the lesson instead of diving into a traditional grammar lesson right away.
Students will naturally want to use their native language when they want to express themselves without the strain of translating into English. Teachers can reduce this tendency by giving clear assignments and directions that are appropriate to the student's English level. Also, the teacher can be encouraging and create an atmosphere that doesn't punish mistakes, so that the students will feel more comfortable using English even if they make mistakes. The teacher can also only respond when students speak English and show that even with mistakes made they can be understood.
In large classes, teachers can use many controlled speaking activities, giving all students opportunities to speak in an efficient manner. The teacher can also use pair/group work to increase student talking time.
