This unit covers the importance of evaluating students and the types of tests they will encounter at school. Evaluating students gives the teacher an idea of where students are on an individual basis, and also helps students figure out where their weaknesses are. Also teachers can allow students to evaluate the classes so that they too can improve lessons. There are many different types of tests that teachers can use to evaluate learners. Before they even take an EFL course students can take placement tests. This way they are matched with the right course level. There are diagnostic tests teachers can administer at the beginning of a course. Throughout the course progress tests can serve to give both teachers and student an idea of what is being retained and what is being forgotten, as well as, practice exams to prepare students for large end of term exams. There are also many external exams that are available for students that are hoping to work for companies, attend universities, and or live in English speaking countries. I was aware of TOIEC and TOEFL, but did not know much about the Cambridge tests. I learned about the many ways to evaluate students and look forward to making a fun way to test students whom may be nervous about examinations. I can see how the experience for students in volunteered or non accredited English courses would differ from those in an official school where they are required to have good grades in order to advance through academics.
