After reading and studying Unit 12, Teaching Pronunciation and Phonology, I learned that the phonemic alphabet is a system of symbols used to the represent sounds of vowels and consonants used to communicate in the English language. I now understand that this is a system to incorporate into my teaching strategy to teach pronunciation to EFL learners in the classroom. It is clear to me after studying this unit that teaching pronunciation to EFL learners is a just as equally important as teaching grammar and should not be neglected in my lessons, as it is a critical component of the language learning experience and confidence builder for my students. The unit gave me a detailed overview with guidelines to follow for teaching pronunciation. The framework (using the phonemic alphabet to teach sounds, rhythm, intonation and stress) presented in this course is a very good model for me to follow as as I navigate the challenge EFL learners face when they are learning that the language is often not pronounced they way it is written which can be difficult and discouraging. I now know how to use the phonemic alphabet as a tool to effectively teach new English words, phrases, sentences and speech by showing my students how to speak, read and write phonetically - I can show them examples and model pronunciation to them in a manner that is consistent with sounds and symbols and ultimately help build confidence in my EFL learners as they learn and practice the language in the classroom.
