This unit is about evaluating and testing the knowledge of English of students. There are different ways to evaluate: testing, tutorials, self-evaluation, monitoring/ observing and registering by the teacher, regular feedback, etc. There are different official tests as well:diagnostic tests, progress tests, practise tests, etc. And there are the general external examinations like the TOEFL or the TOEIC. All serving a quite different goal or emphasise. It is good to learn more about these various external exams because I'm only familiar with the Dutch ones and some English ones because of my interests. I believe the most in evaluating and monitoring the student by the teacher, because as a teacher you spend more time with the students and you see them work and learn in different situations and using the language more freely then during a test. However, I understand that's sometimes necessary or obligatory and then it would be a good thing to combine the results of a test with the findings of the teacher.
