Unit 13 has included information on pronunciation and phenomenology. Pronunciation is one of the most tricky areas of learning English because it is neglected by teachers. The pronunciation of a word can change the meaning of a word or a sentence and therefore need to be focused on in class once students have a basic level of English. The English language has a variation of volume and pitch within it (intonation) which is very important in conveying meaning. E.g. questions fall then rise at the end expecting a reply from the listener. Stressing certain words in a sentence can have an effect on the over all meaning of a sentence e.g. 'She didn't eat the cake' can mean a variation of different things if stress in places of different words and therefore it is very important that students learn this. e.g. she didn't EAT the cake suggests she didn't eat it but she might have thrown the cake out where as SHE didn't eat the cake suggest that it wasn't she who ate the cake but someone else entirely. Usually important information in a sentence is stressed. Teachers can help to show where stress is in a sentence or word by using techniques such as mouth exaggerating and underlining on the board. There are speech organs and other parts of our mouth and throat which are used to produce all the different phonetics in our speech.
