Teach English in Tonbridge - TESOL Courses
This unit was my favorite unit thus far. I felt that by actually getting to watch two different classes in action I was able to get a better understanding of the way a teacher should conduct themselves in order to have an effective lesson that gets the most out of the students. Being able to see this rather than just read about it was extremely useful, in my opinion. The contrast between the two classes was very clear. In the first lesson, the teacher spoke very quickly and was never very clear about what he wanted the students to do. He immediately came in without introduction or personal involvement with the students and continued to say that learning modal verbs was \"very easy\". This was clearly intimidating to the students, who were fearful to participate as a result. The teacher's instructions were limited and vague and while the students were working he sat off to the side or read a book. He was not understanding or helpful in correcting mistakes and overall the classroom environment was tense and fearful. I do not believe the students were able to get much out of that lesson. The second lesson was the opposite of the first. The teacher came in with a smile and immediately had the students laughing and at ease. He made the effort of introducing himself and learning each individual student's Name. He started off the engage phase with something fun and simple that the students clearly already had a grasp on by asking them to come up with a list of animals with a partner. The students were willing to participate and came up with great contributions. The teacher was involved and helpful and even used pictures and descriptions to help expand their list. The students were clearly at ease. The teacher was able to introduce modal verbs from there in a way that the students could understand. The activate stage was clearly a fun stage for the students who were able to create their own animal and use modal verbs to describe the things the animals \"can\" and \"can't\" do. The one issue was that the teacher should have made it clearer that he wanted the students to make up their own animals, but I did like that in the beginning he offered his own creation to show the students what he was expecting. My take-away from this unit is that it is extremely important to create an environment where students feel comfortable and involved. Intimidating students into learning and appearing disinterested with them is never going to be successful, while encouraging them and participating actively in the activities leads to successful learning. The teacher in the second lesson ended up with a far more involved, successful, and organized class while the teacher in the first lesson only created confusion and intimidation.
