The age and motivation of the classes you teach make a big difference on the Type of activities and style of teaching you will need to employ. For example, you cannot teach a group of adults learning English for business purposes the same way that you teach young children who are absolute beginners. This unit was incredibly useful for reassuring me that the most effective teaching method for beginners is actually to continually speak in English, not their native language. The unit was also helpful in outlining a variety of methodologies that I can use to make sure my teaching is effective, such as using as many visuals as possible, using \"choral repetition,\" and using a lot of group and pair work so students talk about the vocabulary and grammar, instead of the teacher simply providing it. The tips on which activities are best suited to one-on-one teaching were also useful for preparing me to work with individual students, even if it's just for additional help in the classroom. Finally, the unit focused a lot of teaching English for Specific Purposes, which requires much more communication with the students on what their motivation and ultimate goal is for learning English. This kind of teaching requires much more flexibility, especially if the students are always tired from work. Overall, this unit reminded me that while you must consider language level of students at all times, you must also consider why students are taking the class and how that will change what how they learn in the classroom.
