Intonation refers to volume and pitch in a sentence. Intonation can change the meaning and context of a sentence. Stress refers words that are essential and most important in a sentence. There are 3 intonations with different attributed meaning, as well as, 5 types of stress and no stressed words. Sound joining is done in 4 ways and is a good example of stress and how native speakers talk. Articulation refers to where sounds are made in the mouth and tongue as well as the words manner of pronunciation. The best tool for this is the IPA phonemic alphabet used in conjunction with a dictionary. This is needed because english is only a partially a phonetic language. Students can use the IPA with a dictionary to know how a word sounds not only how it is spelled correctly.
