This was an interesting unit, as I have some fairly strong feelings about the use of coursebooks in language classes. I personally prefer to use authentic or created materials, especially once the students are at a level where they can begin to understand them and really get some use out of them, and I was happy to see that they are part of the ITTT recommended materials. I agree with the advantages and disadvantages of using course books, and they definitely do serve a purpose. But too often they're just bad, and teachers have to use them because of the curriculum the school follows. I work with one teacher right now who is so reliant on the teacher's version of the book that she doesn't even know what the students' worksheets look like. It's a huge crutch for her, although in the hands of someone with a better feel for teaching, it can be a very useful tool.
