Unit 14 discusses the positives and negatives in the use of course books and other lesson material that can be obtained from authentic and creative sources. For example, authentic material is anything that native speakers read or hear like magazines, songs and films. It is usually interesting and motivating, and can be geared toward to the interests of particular groups. For creative material, teachers design lessons, graded to the level of the students like role-play cards and crossword puzzles. However, compared to creative, authentic material may not be understood easily by students and is not graded to the level of the students. Another option for material, are course books, which provide teachers with a suitable syllabus for of the students that provide a good mix of grammar, vocabulary and skills work. On the other hand, students may not enjoy the book and it dictates what is taught in class and prevent teachers from analyzing the needs of the students. Furthermore, it is up to the teacher to decide whether course book or any lesson material is good or bad because it is the teacher who is in charge of the class and they need to decide whether what will benefit their students. Finally, teachers can use course books and other material and combine it with their own to make a lesson that is suitable for their own students to learn and understand.
