Unit 14 discussed coursebooks and lesson materials. Materials can be either authentic or created. Authentic materials would include anything a native speaker might hear or read. There is an almost and unlimited number of resources available. Authentic materials need to be chosen carefully because they are not graded for level and could be too difficult for beginner students. Since they are real, they can be more interesting for the student. They can give students confidence because they are learning something they can apply in the real world. Created materials offer a good way to reinforce and practice the teaching point. The benefit of using course books is debated. There are advantages to using a book, but the teacher should not strictly follow every detail in the book without considering his/her students. The book can be used as a good Guide because it is on grade level, provides a mix of skills, and provides for a steady progression. A good teacher will omit portions, replace portions, supplement, or adapt the book to suit the needs of the particular students in the class.
