This unit highlights the issue of the course books and various other materials that the members of the class could need, and why the authentic materials and materials created by the teacher are more interesting or more relevant for the students compared to the course books, all in all explaining the advantages and disadvantages of the course books versus created and authentic materials. Authentic materials are all the carriers of the living language, their principal advantages reside in their ‘living’ quality. They are real and therefore may be more interesting and motivating for students. On other hand, they are no designed for the EFL student or graded for study level, and so should be selected carefully. Of course, good teachers should not base all of their lessons around the material in the course book. They will approach creatively to their lessons having always the aim of high effectiveness of the learning process and the best interests of their students: They may decide to omit or adapt certain lessons from the course book if they are not relevant to the students, or replace them with more appropriate material, or add extra material to reinforce some specific language point. We as the teachers should always have in mind the priority and best interests of our pupils and only such kind of teaching approaches will always help to use the course books or created materials to maximum effect.
