Teach English in Stroud - TESOL Courses
In this short lesson we looked at different Types of course materials while discussing the positive and negative aspects of each type. There are two primary types of materials: authentic and created. Authentic course materials are real life materials like newspapers or TV guides which can be used for teaching but are not necessarily designed for teaching. They have the advantage of being relevant, up-to-Date and usually interesting to the students while giving them confidence in dealing with real life materials. They have the disadvantage of not always being good for every student's skill level. Created course materials are designed and created specifically for teaching. This is their primary advantage, the fact that they are sculpted to meet a very specific teaching/learning need. They can be tailored for different skill levels. Their disadvantage is that they can often be out of date and viewed by the students as irrelevant. Course books are helpful in that they provide structure for the class and teacher to follow but they can stifle teacher creativity and become boring and too predictable for the students. Some ways to deal with course books: omit unnecessary material, supplement missing material, replace with more relevant material and adapt to better fill the student's needs.
