This is topic is something that I have had some training in when I was entering speech contests in high school. I was asked to teach this when I first arrived at my tesol job and really enjoyed teaching phonics. It was a fun and engaging couple of lessons and the students had fun trying to produce the sounds. One thing about teaching phonics is not only that it is very useful for speaking but also excellent for practicing listening skills too. I am working in japan where the students find the l/r sounds very difficult to distinguish. Practicing phonics is also very useful for training students to hear the subtle differences.
