Teach English in Filton - TESOL Courses
The testing of students can be done at various points in the learning process and serve different purposes. Within the framework of a EFL course this would typically start with a placement or level test prior to the beginning of the course. Ideally a placement test should cover all four areas of english use: reading, writing, speaking and listening/comprehension. To best find the studentÂ’s level the questions and tasks should be basic and get progressively more difficult as the test goes on. A diagnostic test can also be given to the student(s) prior to the beginning of a course in order help the teacher better prepare the lesson(s) and materials and ensure that they best address the studentsÂ’ needs. Progress tests can be given on an ongoing basis to help evaluate whether the previous subject matter taught has been sufficiently retained by the students. As with placement tests, the progress tests should also cover all four skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening). Beyond these internal tests there are also general external exams such as TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC as well as the series of Cambridge assessment tests for general English. In addition, there are also exams for business english such as the BEC and the BULATS. To prepare for these external exams practice tests can be used during the preparation phase. To ensure a good level of effectiveness the practice test should reflect the structure and content of the external to the highest possible level.", This unit taught me about the different types of tests that schools use to measure student language level ability
