This chapter is certainly necessary for ESL teachers in order to understand what types of testing is appropriate and when. The external exams are particularly important to know about, as they are not part of the classroom setting, yet they will be vital milestones in the students' English learning career should their university or employment require it. As far as the tests relevant to the English teacher, the differentiation between placement/diagnostic/progress is important but is also quite intuitive and logical.In this unit I learned about conditionals and reported speech. There are a few different types of conditionals: zero, first, second, third, and mixed conditionals. Conditionals are sentences that have some sort of condition involving if or when. I also learned about reporting speech which is when changes are taken to report what happened when relating direct speech to a person who wasn't there for the conversation. There are many ways that students can get this wrong and it will be a very difficult subject to teach.
