I personally don't like the use of course books. They seem rigid and often the content found in them is impractical or the given expressions are not very realistic. It gives students a false impression or an unnatural example of how to use the language. I prefer authentic materials and the use of creativity, though I know that it may be difficult for students to study with such materials. I see how the book is sometimes necessary or helpful but I am more comfortable using it only sparingly. I notice the students enjoy class much more this way.
