Though course books are controversial, it is clear that no teacher can rely entirely on one. In many ways, course books can help provide security: they provide the inexperienced teacher with ideas, save preparation time or give a bit of structure to a course by providing continuity and progression and covering all the key areas of language learning. Course books also have the benefit of being tested activities and looking visually appealing to students. However, a downside to using course books is that one size does not always fit all, in the sense that the book may be designed for use by a broad range of nationalities when the teacher may have a more homogenous class or the book may fail to suit other specific needs of the class. Furthermore, course books can be a kind of ‘easy-out’ for the teacher, who might soon lean on the book too much, become lazy or allow their lessons to become predictable and irrelevant to the class. The teacher must thoughtfully decide how much of the book to use, whether to replace parts of it, add to parts or change how a section is taught – in other words, decide what to omit, replace, supplement and adapt.
