this is a hard unit to apply in reality. according to my learning experences from my teachers, most of them use the course books. it is easy to control student study level and easy to grade. but mean while teachers also use a lot of extra material like newpappers and short film. the langruage course is always be very good to mix with a varity of creative material becasue it can catch students interest easily. but as a conclusion, normally the course material is decided by the school, what can teacher do is working on the replacement meterial and extra such as games to increase the knowledge avalubility to students.
