Unit 14 explained how to select materials for a lesson or a course and what a teacher should take into account when choosing texts and supplemental items. The unit also offered several example activities for created materials as well as a role-play activity. I learned in Unit 14 that I am still having difficulty grasping the progression of the ESA and its various formats. The concepts of each phase of instruction are clear, but when put into multiple choice formats, the order of operation is any combination gets confusing. It seems to me that it is somewhat relative, and in a boomerang structure, various steps of the lesson could easily be switched depending on teaching style. Granted that I am a relatively new teacher with only a few years of experience, I find that the multiple choice testing of ESA is not clear or effective. I would rather have sample lessons presented in their entirety and then asked to identify individual parts. Yes, this was given in previous units but only once and that hardly suffices (for me) to attain a strong enough grasp of the varying styles of ESA, especially when that single exercise is put up against several units which require this M/C format to be clearly deciphered.
