Books and materials are very much subject to the needs of the students but also to the goals and teaching style of the teacher. Books and materials, whether authentic or created materials, can support the teaching goals and enrich the learning, however, they can also restrict the freedom of both the students and the teacher. When relevant and interesting they can provide structure and inject a lot of fun into the course content. In this case they offer both the students and the teacher a graded, tested and expedient source of information. When they are not relevant and interesting, or even dictated by the school, they can greatly reduce the studentsÂ’ motivation and willingness to participate. Selecting the proper books and or materials requires the teacher to assess not only their relevance to the studentsÂ’ learning goals and needs but also the teacherÂ’s own ability to properly use them during the class, i.e. the teacher must also be comfortable and confident in using them. Finding authentic material that is both topical and relevant to the students is sometimes challenging but can be rewarded by a high level of interest and participation on the studentsÂ’ part.
