Coursebooks are friend to some teachers, foe to others, and to still others, they are just one of the materials, not the be all and end all of the course materials. Coursebooks can provide a teacher with a set of tried and true lessons with their own set of tests, syllabi, and worksheets. The students usually expect them as well, but take care to use them if they are required for a class, or you will leave the students wondering why they bought the books in the first place. They provide a god resource for the inexperienced teacher as well. The danger lies in a teacher becoming too reliant on them. Teachers can become lazy and lose their creative edges by heavy reliance on the coursebook. The students can become bored with the book when it is overused or when supplemental materials are not used. Cost and appropriateness to your students should also be considered. Other materials, both authentic and creative, should supplement a coursebook. Authentic texts, such as menus, television guides, and taped interviews, can be used to give the student confidence in using "real"" materials and add variety and interest to the lesson. One drawback of authentic materials are that they are not graded to the level of students you are teaching
