The English language has many exceptions! I learned that nouns are: common, proper, compound, abstract, and collective. Transitive verbs are followed directly by an object, and intransitive verbs cannot be followed by an object. e.g., Let's eat. There are five types of adverbs: manner, place, time, degree, and frequency. Adverbs usually go after the object of a transitive verb. e.g., He ate his lunch quickly. Gerunds end in 'ing', and are used as a noun. Pronouns are: personal, possessive, reflexive, and relative.I have learned different ways to teach pronunciation, particularly with my training in the Wilson Reading System. This unit seems to be the well from which every strategy I have learned is harvested. If nothing else, learning to read phonetic script helps highlight the complexity of the English language and its wide variety of sound and sound types. By knowing the sources of pronunciation it is easier to analyze why, exactly, students may struggle with certain sounds and how, exactly, the teacher can help bridge the gap.
