Unit 9 discusses the use of course books and materials. This lesson goes more in-depth with what authentic materials are. Authentic materials are real magazines, newspapers, brochures, and etc... I learned that since these sources are real, they can be more interesting to the student and help them gain confidence in their skills. However, authentic materials are not very suitable for beginners trying to learn english, because they are probably past their language level. On the other hand, created materials, which I learned are any teacher aids designed by the teacher to supplement materials from a regular course book. Created materials can be adapted to certain needs of the students and their language level. This unit also discusses the pros and cons of using course books. I learned that some advantages of using a course book are that is provides a syllabus, the syllabus helps show the progression to the students, and provides a good balance of grammar/vocab/skills work. A few cons of using a course book are that it can make a teacher lazy, it can discourage students if it is boring, and it may not cover some subjects in depth.
