Teach English in Moretonhampstead - TESOL Courses
The biggest thing I have learned in this unit and most important must be the advantages and disadvantages of authentic and created materials. Both have their pro's and con's I think it just depends on the teachers to be able to enforce both of the materials the right way for students to understand and also for them to be engaged and interested in the lessons. Mix things up between authentic materials and the work from the course book to avoid boring the students. - Authentic Materials: Real and therefore more interesting to the students, this is also motivating because they gain confidence when they understand them. They can also be chosen by the particular interests of the group of students. - Created Materials: Designed by teacher to replace the supplement materials from a coursebook. Can be graded to the level of the students. Examples: crosswords, role-play. Coursebook's Pro's and Con's: Pro's: Syllables provided for the level of the students. Progression. Balanced mix of skills work, vocabulary and grammar. Security for students and teachers. Con's: Doesn't fit specific needs of the class. Dictate what is being taught. Predictable and boring to the students - not motivated - not interested - not enthusiastic. Options for use of a coursebook: 1. Omit : Omit certain lessons from the book which they think is relevant to the level of their students as well as their interests. 2. Replace: Teacher choose to replace unsuitable materials with similar and more appropriate materials. 3. Supplement: Teacher add extra materials to the book to focus on language points. 4. Adapt: Teacher uses the same materials in her own style/way.
