There are pros and cons to using authentic materials and created materials. Using authentic materials can be more interesting and motivating to students. Also, students gain confidence when they understand the materials. However, authentic materials are not designed for the EFL students so teachers have to be careful about selecting it. I use both authentic and created materials when teaching. I tend to use more created materials when I teach ESL students. They benefit from flashcards for vocabulary and role-playing and picture stories for speaking. I have learnt that using both course books and supplement materials such as created materials are beneficial to students. I have to best use the course books by carefully selecting it and plan the lesson which will motivate my students. Also plan the lesson based on what students are in need and what needs to be supplemented,adapted and replaced.
