The content in this unit took a lot of time understanding compared to other units. As it confused me, I can understand how it could confuse a non-native speaker easily. I find that this subject is important, however not to the degree that it was stressed in the unit (e.g. 28 pages). As a language learner myself I can understand that often tonation is best learnt simply through mimickry and practise. Pronunciation is very important, however the phonemic chart was difficult to follow for me so I can only see it being a large hurdle for english students.Unit 18 on modals, phrasal verbs and passive voice has a lot of complex ideas in one unit. I enjoyed working on the modal verbs because my grandparents have raised me to pay attention to such things when asking a favor from someone. My family put a lot of emphasis on being polite so that section came naturally to me. Passive and active voice is a new concept to me and was challenging due to the present, past and future tense. I must say I don't think I fully understood phrasal verbs. I think I will have to do more independent studying in this subject.
