Teach English in Wilmslow - TESOL Courses
The most valuable insights I have gained from this course are those relating to teaching methodologies, considerations when teaching business english learners, lesson planning, grammar, how to go about assessing and testing, and classroom activities.
Through the process of completing this course, my ideas have changed on how I want to structure my future classes. For one thing, I want to physically structure the classroom in a way that encourages not only teacher-student interaction, but also student-student interaction during group activities, pair work, etc.
I also have a better idea how I want to academically structure my classes, utilizing the ESA methodology. In the past, I tried to make lessons fun and engaging, but never set aside the initial period of class time to ensure I had my students as fully engaged as possible in the classroom environment. I also never paid attention to how much time we spent formally studying as opposed to informally producing language, and I was concerned with accuracy at all stages of the lesson.
I anticipate that my next class, while not specifically a business english class, will be interested in learning that sort of english, based on the little I know about their demographics. It will be useful to keep on hand the suggested business english assessment, as well as keep in mind and elicit feedback from the group regarding their specific goals in english, and any timeframes for learning english they may be on.
I further appreciate the provided lesson plan template, as well as having had to use them to create various lesson plans to suit multiple aims. The provided lesson plan template is clearly arranged, and keeps the main focus of the class easily accessible, in addition to providing space for detailed ESA procedures.
In regards to grammar, I have learned a lot over the course of this program. I have had no study in grammar since high school, and had forgotten much of what I had learned. This course provided a valuable refresher on tenses, as well as an introduction to more difficult grammatical structures which I don't remember ever having covered before.
Due to this course, I know that in the future I need to ensure that speaking, writing, reading, and listening are all included in initial and ongoing assessments of english level or progress. Having all four receptive and productive skills tested leads to a more accurate representation of actual english abilities, since, often, students score higher or lower in different areas.
Lastly, through the ITTT course, I have gained a wealth of ideas on classroom activities – through suggestions listed in the text, activities I have been assigned to come up with on my own, and via the recommended resources listed throughout the course. I definitely feel that I am better prepared to lead an effective english class after completing the materials in this course – and when problems arise in the future, I now have an idea of where to turn for information or other resources.
