Unit 7 is a short unit that covers the different Types of subject matter involved in teaching a new language: vocabulary, grammar, and language functions. Though every lesson will be focusing on something different, this unit stresses the importance of establishing a balance among these categories. This unit discusses what factors to consider when designing lessons teaching new material, such as student skill level, similarity to the student's first language, and appropriateness. It outlines how to structure different types of lessons using the previously discussed ESA format. It offers examples of types of activities to employ within each of the ESA phases, and what kinds of activities will be most useful depending on the type of material being taught.
