Unit 14 is a short unit discussing the use of different types of course materials when teaching English. It outlines both the benefits and disadvantages of using textbooks, authentic materials and created materials when designing lessons. While it is important to use already established textbooks as a general foundational syllabus that will be appropriate to the level of your students, it is equally important to keep students engaged and motivated by creating materials specifically catered to their needs, interests and creativity. It is also helpful to incorporate some authentic materials into your coursework to allow them to practice language in a more realistic (and thus more challenging) way. Being able to engage with and understand material that native speakers would be using/reading/listening to helps build confidence in students and keeps them motivated to learn more. This unit also offers examples of created activities to use in supplementing your teaching syllabus.
