This unit looks at how to organise and manage a class as well as how to build rapport and maintain discipline. The unit begins by outlining how best to use eye contact and gestures in the classroom. It then goes on to discuss the various ways that students can be grouped for classroom activities, together with the advantages and disadvantages of each grouping. We then go on to learn about the various ways that students can be arranged in the classroom followed once a again by the advantages and disadvantages of each method. We also learn about the ideal teacher positioning for different types of activities and the importance of giving students individual attention when needed. The unit goes on to discuss the importance of finding the right balance between teacher talking time and student talking time. I also gives advice on how best to help build rapport within a classroom as well as how and how not to go about maintaining discipline. From this unit I learnt that eye contact, when used effectively can help build rapport in the classroom. Different class groupings can have an effect on class dynamics and things like 'student talking time'. The way you organise simple things like seating arrangements, can help to maintain discipline or make classrooms feel more intimate. A teacher needs to be aware of the best position and movement required for different portions of the class. On top of that I learnt many new tips on how to help establish rapport in the classroom and to never lose your temper when attempting to maintain discipline.
