Unit 11 introduces the receptive skills in language teaching, that is, listening and reading. Reading and listening could include different skills, which include detailed reading, scanning for specific information, skimming for general overview and reading for prediction.Difficulties that language learners will have to face in reading and listening include new vocabulary, complicated language structures and unfamiliar grammar. More importantly, in teaching receptive skills such as reading and listening, the teacher should choose topics and texts according to the class’ interest and their language levels, which could be different in the same class. Therefore, it is crucial to know the students, both their interest and levels, in order to cater to their personal needs when considering the topics to teach.
