This unit focused on vocabulary, grammatical structures and language functions. I particulary liked the metaphor that grammar is the trunk of a tree, and vocabulary and functions are the leaves on the tree. I think this is a helpful way of viewing grammar, as the trunk or roots of a tree, without which we would not be able to have leaves. As such, even though grammar may seem tedious or boring, it is imperative to learning a language. This unit explored the criteria used when selected vocabulary to teach, notably: appropriacy to the students and to the task, frequency and coverage and lastly, teachability. When teaching vocabulary, students need to know the meaning of the word, the use, where it belongs in a sentence (grammar), how it affects other words, spelling and pronunciation. This unit also gave examples of which types of lessons (e.g ESA straight arrow, boomerang, patchwork) could be used to teach either vocabulary, grammar or language functions.
