This unit, entitled Teaching Pronunciation, examined one of the most neglected aspects of English language teaching and yet, an area that is very important to students. Pronunciation can affect the quality of a student’s communication and an effective teacher considers teaching it, an integral part of the course. This unit considered how intonation and stress on certain words can affect the meaning of a sentence and presented several methods for indicating and teaching both. The phonemic alphabet was introduced as a way to simplify the sometimes confusing spelling of everyday English. The speech organs, articulation and teaching techniques for the pronunciation of individual sounds wrapped up the module.
