This unit, which focused on teaching receptive skills, talked in depth about the processes of reading and listening comprehension. It offered important information about selecting topics, texts, and activities related to strengthening these skills. It is clear that presenting topics that your students care about is an integral part of finding texts and activities that students care to participate in. I was particularly intrigued by the section that describes the different ways in which students process and understand incoming information. The example about a headline reading 'Cowboys Destroy Bears', or something to that effect, showed an interesting perspective on contextual processing that I had not considered. It's clearly important to consider cultural background and surroundings in order to find topics that are relevant and will make sense to the students. Additionally, choosing topics that are culturally sensitive seems like an important aspect to consider, so as to not accidentally offend any students or cause conflict within the class.
