Students must be able to do four things in order to learn a new language: be exposed to it, understand its meaning, understand how it's constructed, and be able to practice and produce it. And to do this, there must be a balance of grammar, vocabulary, and functions being taught. However, only one of the three should be focused on in a lesson. In grammar or vocabulary-focused lessons, a straight arrow ESA approach is commonly used. For a function-focused lesson, a boomerang or patchwork ESA lesson is more common. The fact that only one of the three should be focused on is new to me. I would have thought to combine them all into a lesson. But looking back now, I see how overly complicated it would have been for my students. It is definitely beneficial to know to slow down and take each lesson one step at a time.
