I learned a lot from unit one. This unit delves into the qualities, roles, and responsibilities of teachers and learners. It describes the different roles a teacher may take in a classroom from manager to prompter to model and so on. It also discusses the difference age has on types of learners with adults being more motivated, with more experience, and a longer attention span than younger learners, but also being more nervous and prone to matching the language to their native tongue. Culture also plays a role, and teachers need to be sensitive of the culture they teach in - in Asia, learners tend to be respectful but less creative. Finally, the unit discusses different language levels with lower levels experiencing more immediate successes and being more visual learners and upper levels experiencing more of a plateau but being more motivated. Learners tend to be motivated by future careers, interests in languages, travel opportunities, studying abroad, communicating with friends and colleagues, and so on. The unit provides a good overview of the dynamic between teacher and learner.
