The structure of a lesson is integral to the effectiveness of the subject being taught. It is imperative that students are engaged and interested (in order to ease the tension that often arises from new language), that they learn new language and the structure of that language, and that they have an opportunity to use, or activate, that language in realistic scenarios. There are many methodologies regarding the approach of teaching language effectively, but no single methodology will apply effectively to all circumstances and learning scenarios. Therefore, it is important, as an instructor, to plan lessons circumstantially and adjust as necessary. It is also important to (1)provide as much exposure to the language as possible while (2)also alleviating student anxieties about the language; correction and praise will allow a teacher to accomplish both of these objectives. When the instructor can effectively use both correction and praise modestly, then the students have the opportunity to use the language freely while also receiving correction on more common errors and therefore preventing these errors from becoming ?ingrained.? Overall, a teacher must be flexible in methodology, but structured in planning; this will allow students to both absorb and (re)produce language in an environment that provides structure, safety, and freedom.
