As a elemntery school teacher, I was familiar with most of the content in this unit. I have taught the different parts of speech to many students over the years. However it was good to consolidate and reinforce my understanding of parts of speech contained within a sentence.
My knowledge of verbs has improved. It was the first time had come across transitive, intransitive verbs and gerunds.The verb, of course, is the heart of a sentence; every sentence has one.
If you can locate the verb within a sentence(transitive,intransitive,auxillary) you are in a better position to disect the other parts of a speech within a sentence. For an ESL student it must be a daunting pospect leaning the differnet rules about verb tenses. It is for me and I am a native speaker!
I read that in thailand the verb has one basic form. Whether the the sentence is about the past, the present or the future, the verb is the same. Having found the verb it is important to work out who is doing what within a sentence. I bought a book Before commencing Unit 2. The book was called English Grammer for Dummies. I liked this analogy from the book: "A sentence is like a flatbed truck carrying your meaning to the reader or listener. Verbs are the wheels of the truck
