This unit provided an overview on the different methodologies and approaches commonly used in the language learning process, from straight out translation style methodologies such as the Classical Method, to the other end of the spectrum such as Suggestopedia. The most effective methodology presented was the ESA Method, which stands for Engage, Study, Activate. This is most effective because it employs a variety of techniques and allows learning to occur in a variety of ways. The Engage component of the lesson allows the students to feel at ease and receptive to language learning, whilst at the same time revising or introducing language topics. The Study component is where the explicit teaching takes place, and activities are completed related to the new material taught to ensure comprehension. The Activate stage is where student move beyond the knowledge of the concepts taught and put them into a realistic context such as role plays, surveys, producing materials, debates, etc.
