This unit discussed teaching methodologies. I learned that there are several different methods used to teach english as a second language and many of them have useful aspects. The method that received primary focus in this unit was the ESA, Engage-Study-Activate method which involves engaging students in the language use in a non-threatening manner, such as through games and discussion; then studying specific points of language that are the focus for that class; then Activating the students by getting them to use the language points that they learnt about in the study stage. I also learnt that the stages may be shifted around in order depending on the complexity of the topic being studied, or the learning level of the students. It is always important however that each level be included in lesson planning.
