Present tense is used to describe something happening in the moment. There are four kinds of present tense. The present simple is used in sentences like 'I work'. The present continuous stresses an ongoing action like 'I am working'. The present perfect adds a 'have' to the sentence. 'I have written'. The present perfect continuous adds 'been' to the mix of present perfect. 'I have been writing'. There are positive, negative, and question forms for each present tense. There are also contracted forms, combining 'am' or 'have' to 'I'.
