This unit focuses on teaching methodologies and finding the right, balanced technique. Methods range on a scale of heavy conditioning to total self-discovery. Conditioning methods like Grammar-translation and Audio-lingualism are more outdated and are less helpful at higher language levels. The self-discovery methods like Silent Way and Community Language Learning can focus too much on fluency and not enough on accuracy. Other methods involve discovery and conditioning both such as Presentation, Practice & Production and Task Based Learning. Each method has a time and a place. The best teachers balance fluent communication with grammar structure, encourage as much language exposure as possible, and reduce stress. Ideally, teaching should involve three steps, in varying order for greater diversity: engaging, studying and activating. To engage is to captivate the students? interest with game-like play in order to introduce a topic by opening their minds in English. Studying involves more structure and correction. Teachers may also need to be more involved to explain new concepts. The end goal is for students to activate all they?ve learned into communicative speech, with little teacher involvement. The steps though will jump around as improvements can best be done during studying after some activation has been shown.
